What type of gift is appropriate for my host family?
Why not try to find something representative of our area, but remember that whatever it is, it should be light-weight and not fragile. You might want to consider a gift from Baldwin Brass, a hand-crafted product from the Amish like a quilted tablecloth or bag, or some Hershey’s or Godiva chocolate.
What is the best way to deal with money?
It is a good idea to use a debit card attached to a checking account while in Germany. You can access your funds through an ATM, but there will be a fee for the transfer of funds and for use at an ATM from a different bank. This avoids carrying too much money. Because there are fees attached to each transaction, you should consider the money you might need for an extended few days rather using the machine each time you need money.
It is a good idea to arrive in Germany with some Euros. You can purchase Euros through your local bank or at AAA. There are fees involved and the cash is seldom available that day. It may take up to one week to receive the money.
Credit cards may be used. Visa and American Express appear to be the most common.
You may not spend dollars in Germany. Do not take American cash.
What type of suitcase should I have?
Because we will be moving suitcases along streets and placing them on public transportation before arriving at our partner school, it is a good idea to use a suitcase with wheels. The best is one which has an extension handle and can be pulled along behind you. You should also have a small backpack. Use your backpack as your carry-on bag for the airplane.
